Prophecies and Discoveries

What Are Prophecies?

If you watch the weatherman for your weekly forecast, they like to predict the weather by telling us whether or not we will have rain or snow within the next few days.
It’s not a surprise that these forecasters do their very best and can still be very wrong about the weather conditions because of many reasons. One, is that their models they read forecast winds and directions based on that time, and the winds change and reroute the storms, or the storm weakens faster than they think and it doesn’t rain or snow at all!
But what if one weather man was so good that he told you in 700 years from now you would see the most snow fall in your entire life and was right? That would be absolutely crazy wouldn’t it!?
Well, this is what you would call a fulfilled prediction if it came true and that would be nearly and entirely impossible to do!
When the Bible predicts something is going to happen hundreds of years before it actually does, then we are skeptical whether or not it actually happened! But since we have the New Testament that was written that 700 years later, we see wow! That prophecies over and over came true! This is miraculous by God!
So miraculous in fact, that if someone was right only 8 times in their prophecies, the chance is 1 chance in 100,000000000000000 (That’s 10 to the 17th power!)

     What Does That Mean?

Bury the state of Texas with that many silver dollars! Pour them all over the state and it would not only cover it, but would pile up to 2 feet deep! Now, imagine if we put a blind fold on a friend and marked one silver coin out of all of them and sent him out to locate it! Now imagine if he bent down and picked the marked coin right up! Wow that’s a lot of odds!

That is the chance of only 8 prophecies predicted coming true. But guess what? Over 351 Prophecies have been predicted for the coming Messiah, and Jesus came to earth and fulfilled all of them! (We have a list of all these “predictions” by the Old Testament Prophets, and have a document that you can request listing all 351 Prophecies. And there are more prophecies also in scripture that have nothing to do with the Messiah but were fulfilled also!

I think our favorite prophecy was found in Genesis when God said he would bruise the head of the serpent the devil. And when Jesus died on the cross he destroyed all death and curse giving us the chance to overcome! That verse in Genesis was over 4000 years before Jesus came!

*As much as one-fourth of the Bible consists of prophetic statements. Every single prediction has come or is in the process of coming true–with 100% accuracy. This is true because the Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit (who is God) as we talked about in the previous lesson.

            Archaeological Discoveries:

*There are over 100,000 discoveries that help us to know we are on the right track with God’s Word as the Bible mentions, people who lived, things they owned, Kings who reigned, wars that happened, names of cities and names of people groups that we actually found artifacts that prove all of it is accurate.

Here is one example of a New Testament writer named Luke who knew what he was talking about!

*Luke (the writer we believe wrote the book of Acts) not only was accurate in naming 32 countries, 54 cities, 9 islands perfectly, modern mariners have confirmed that Luke was completely accurate with the details surrounding Paul’s final journey from Palestine to Italy. Luke also mentions names of government officials, tetrarchs and more, and found to be historically accurate with other documents!

In this lesson we learned two very important things:

1.     We learned that Bible prophecy is not only important to know what it is, but that we can trust it to be correct all the time. We learned the odds like a weatherman making a lucky guess and how the Prophets of old were actually told by God hundreds of years before Jesus came about the predictions of his coming and exactly how he would come!

2.     We learned secondly that a lot of discoveries have been made and artifacts have been found that really prove that the Bible is accurate about people who lived, wars, articles people owned, Kings that reigned, and much more through archaeological finds!

We hope that you have learned in the end never to doubt God’s Word, and that we can fully trust and rely upon every Word that it says. It will never lie, and it is the only Book that God gave to us that has 1000’s of years of history to teach us very many life lessons. What is more important is that it is the only book that tells us how we can personally know God!
